Art History and Museum Professions

This is an interdisciplinary major that draws on FIT’s strengths in art history, business, technology, and design. You’ll learn about professional roles available within museums, galleries, and other art organizations, working in such areas as public and press relations, curation, marketing, rights and reproductions, retail, archives, conservation, membership and visitor services, logistics, and auctions. Faculty members are academic specialists in art history and well connected to art professionals. They take great pride in both mentoring and providing opportunities to network with industry experts. The program is unique among museum studies programs for its mission of preparing students for a wide range of art careers.

CAREER OUTCOMES
Graduates go on to professional positions at Sotheby’s, Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Grey Art Gallery at New York University, the Queens Historical Society, the Brooklyn Arts Council, and various Chelsea contemporary art galleries. Students also go on to graduate-level study in art history, museum studies, art law, library science, conservation, and various business fields.
