Technical Design
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
JAY AND PATTY BAKER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY
In the global fashion industry, technical designers, who communicate the details of a garment to the factory, are vital liaisons between American designers and overseas patternmakers, ensuring the correct fit and shape and adherence to industry specs and standards. You’ll learn to be involved in every phase of product development, including patternmaking, specification review, Browzwear 3D fit, and production. Ultimately, technical designers make sure that final production samples—and garments shipped to stores—are produced exactly as the designer and buyer intended.

When asked, “How do you put on pants?” Air Force veteran Judy McCombs laughed: “In bed with a lot of wiggling. It’s like putting on skinny jeans.” For their capstone project, graduating Technical Design students worked with wounded veterans to engineer clothing that is comfortable, stylish, and easy to put on for those who use a wheelchair or prosthesis. Student Nastaran Rivera ’15 said, “Fashion can make a huge difference in your demeanor, self-esteem, and even personality.”
